I have always loved being around babies and have enjoyed taking care of children ever since I was old enough to do so. In kindergarten on my “what do I want to be when I grow up” page I put down that I wanted to be a Mommy. Well, I did grow up and married my high school sweetheart and we have be blessed by 5 children and 3 grandchildren. I have provided childcare for over 20 years as well as teaching Sunday school, childcare, playschool, coaching various kids’ teams and being a club leader. We spent some time being foster parents and through that work I began to see some of way’s that pregnancy and birth impacted the women whose children where in our care. After the birth of our 5th baby I began to wonder what was in store for me next. It was a natural progression for me to take an interest in helping and supporting women as they go through pregnancy, labour and birth.
Each of my labours and births were as different from one another as my children are so I know that no births are ever exactly the same. Through the years as I talk to women about their birth stories I am convinced that by understanding our own bodies and the process of birth, we will be able to be confident in our decisions, as well as encourage other mothers in their journey. The birth experience will affect the mother and child for the rest of their lives and has a profound effect on the family and community.
As I began to serve women as a doula I realized that there was a large gap when it came to childbirth education. I began to gather some of the wisdom I had learned from places such as CAPPA Canada, Birthing from within, Rebozo the Gina Kirby method and other great resources. I started to put together a class and began to teach parents-to-be. I took a bit from all my trainings and shared it with parents with the hope that would be able to mentor families as they journey through their pregnancy, birth and becoming new parents.
I am very exited to now be able to offer holistic lactation consultations as an IBCLC to women and family's who are struggling with breastfeeding. I specialize in airway issues and the impact that can have on the breastfeeding dyad. Through a holistic lens I work with women to look at the whole picture and what will best support the motherbaby to thrive in their breastfeeding relationship.
A woman has an amazing and complex body. The process of pregnancy, labour and birth is also amazing and complex and in many ways, both mysterious and spiritual.
Knowing the way that her body will works in birth helps a woman to have a better understanding of what will work for her during labour and birth. Being aware of what is happening in and around her, a woman can learn to know herself and what she needs for her pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent. The amount of discomfort she may feel and the extent to which labour is painful is dependent on many factors. Some can be controlled, some can be influenced and others may be unchangeable.
Every woman is a unique individual. A woman's faith and beliefs are a major part of her identity and how she reacts to everyday situations. All belief systems are not the same, and should not be excluded from her labour. By exploring cultural and personal beliefs, the mother can learn more about what will affect her during birth and as she becomes a parent.
A woman in labour deserves an environment in which her privacy, autonomy and emotional security is protected, and her mobility is encouraged. The emotions of a birthing woman can have profound effects on her feelings about her birth experience. Women must be allowed to express all their birth related feelings.
I believe that women should labour and birth where they are most comfortable. I encourage the father/partner to be loving, gentle and supportive of the mother during her labour and birth.
I hope to provide resources and encourage an environment for parents-to-be to learn, grow, explore and research how, where, and with whom they will choose to give birth. I hope that by working with women I can them find the tools to enable them to be confident in their decisions. I believe that giving birth and breastfeeding is something women instinctively know how to do but don't always understand how to get there. Our fears, memories, perceptions, imaginations, and other peoples horror stories, have “erased” our memories of how to birth.
I believe that women are the decision makers over their body and baby's. I always encourage parents to take responsibility for the decisions they make, sometimes in spite of what others may think.
It is my hope that through my support the women and families I serve will be truly blessed on their journey of discovery. I hope that they will find the strength and inner knowing they will need as they begin to prepare for birth, postpartum and meeting your new baby.
